That I Might Know Him - The Sacred Secret

Breath by breath, moment by moment we live, we thrive in this material being not by our circumstances but by the His Spirit’s supply. By the living and active Savior we have our being we are as it were not here at all until we first are found IN Him. The indescribable becomes apparent when we look at life from this angle. We are His expression, His body and His creation. There is nothing or no one that is not in His care or control. He is the Master of the hours that fill the spaces between the seconds. In this faith we succumb to the rhythm of His song. We are not merely the notes on the paper but the vibration of His breath as it echoes through all that He has created. We are in tune with the song of the Lord when He is our only source. I am not talking about an eternal perspective because that would assume that there is another perspective. I am talking of the one truth that satisfies all in all. Only from acceptance of this absolute can one surrender into the arms of our Creator God. Everything else is mere lip service until this absolute takes hold of our soul. It is grace and glory and peace and hope. It is more than a feeling or a knowing, it is a belonging that enraptures the heart to joy unspeakable and a living testimony of love never ending.

The secret joy in knowing Him is not because one aspires to it by gaining in knowledge until one overflows. It is this sacred secret that I whimsically portrait as if He wills by some miracle of Divine grace it may be shared by His Spirit in the spaces between these letters. For it is not the substance of things it is the actuality of all things that I am pointing toward. Not merely a faith in our faith but another dimension of His being that is ours to share, ours to handle, ours to embrace and drink of, if we are willing. The key is not in more about Him as knowledge puffs up. I have shared this sacred secret before in the saying “The secret to more of God is not less of us but less of what we think.” However this morning I find myself urgently compelled by Him to write this note to you as if by some act of God you may find something here that reaffirms you of your first love in Him. It is the most significant thing I will ever share with you. In reality it is all that matters and all we have to share. I now know that God wants His breath returned to Him. He is as it were breathlessly in love with us and has sent forth His Spirit in us so as to make us His home. We in turn must exhale that He may inhale. We must exhale our selfishness, our carnality, our right to self, even our will, that the song of the Lord may be heard in the exchange of our lives, in the breathing of God in and out of us as it flows out and in from Him. I am not separating us from God in this picture I am clumsily limited by English trying to reveal us as a many membered body with a single breath. His.

The poetry of this is simple. We are busy. He is still. We are infatuated with covering our nakedness. He is transparent. We seek knowledge because we think it speaks of Him. He believes all things, hopes all things and endures all things and never fails. It is this “all things” I want to share with you right now. The truth if you can accept it is that in ourselves we actually don’t believe anything. That is why we try and believe so many things all at once. Whether rumor or revelation we stuff them all in our head and try and balance them as if in some way they are all equally valid and equally potent. This is the way of death. It has no life, it is the very letter that kills. We become brain bound to death.

I must tell you this as if to whisper in your ear. God is calling us to “Return to your First love. A fiery flame of passion that consumes all else.” There were two trees named in the original garden. Literally a tree of death= good and evil and a tree of “Lives”. This tree of death named good and evil is where we all begin in the mind set on the flesh. However when we choose our first love and simplicity of devotion to Christ we leap from the tree of death and into life. We must believe one thing and deny another to have what we see in Christ. If we go back and eat of good and evil thinking we are double minded and receive nothing from God. Even in math a positive plus a negative equals nothing. We must not negate all His faith and love with an equal and opposite doubt or fear. That is false wisdom and earthy. We must not have a double hearted faith as if to suggest that we find some value in the Adamic past. We must raise our thinking to a single eye on Christ. Not in a mental ascent but in a passion as if our life depends on it because it surely does! We must burn the bridge that tempts us to go back to good and evil thinking. When we get serious about not being a spiritual pack rat of so called knowledge our first love will ignite and the glory of God will bathe us clean from our old thinking and it’s fears. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Make room in your mind. Choose life and throw some stuff out!

Consider that the Spirit comes to bear witness of Jesus. It is that witness we long for everyday as His children we want to see Him move in us and bless others. It is our heart crying Abba Father. He can ONLY bear witness of Jesus and we so often are lifting up our efforts, our knowledge and asking Him to move. He cannot. We are still living in His breath and not giving it back to Him. We must lay down our lives, our thinking, our ways to see Him move. We must return His breath to Him in love, in worship, in surrender.

Oh that we would believe a few scriptures rather than know them all and believe nothing. Where is the heart that once beat for Him and nothing else would satisfy. For in this is the sacred secret that in all our getting we have forgotten the Wisdom of knowing that only one thing is important. Him.
